As he waited in the gas station parking lot, Gannon inspected the pictures Adeline sent.

Jacked and Twisted warned they could plow through the occasional snowbank but that the trucks would get bogged down if the chassis dragged over long distances. They only had about a foot of clearance between the road and the axels. Judging by how high the snow in the photos rose on the dogs, the last road and the private drive were both buried deeper than that.

He backed out of the group conversation and tapped on Adeline’s name, opening their one-on-one messages to update her on their progress. He would mention something about John and Nicole too, so she wouldn’t be surprised if she caught on to tension at the cabin. And so she could pray.

To speak up, John must’ve been pretty upset.

Before typing anything new, Gannon skimmed their last messages. One from Addie about precious cargo, sent at three thirty that morning. Why hadn’t he seen that?

He scrolled, reviewing the conversation.

A conversation he hadn’t had. This had been during Tim’s shift at the wheel.

Cold air swirled into the vehicle as the manager climbed back into his seat. “Ready to end this?”

“Were you sending texts on my phone?”

Tim’s mouth popped open, and his gaze dipped to the phone. “You were sleeping. She just wanted an update.”

No, she’d wanted more than that, or she wouldn’t have called him precious.

No wonder Tim had been single all those years.

Tim lifted his hands in surrender. “Sorry, man. Won’t happen again.”

No, it wouldn’t, because Gannon would change his passcode as soon as he had a few minutes to spare. He fired off a few messages to Adeline before focusing back on Tim. “The roads by the cabin haven’t been plowed at all.”

“Okay.” Tim winced and took out his own phone. “I’ll see what I can do.”

The easy compliance either meant Tim was still determined to play Santa Claus, or he really did regret texting Adeline from Gannon’s phone.

Gannon would take it, either way.

From the driver’s seat of the next vehicle over, Philip gave him a thumbs up. In the rearview mirror, he spotted John and Nicole in the last SUV, still parked at the pump but fueled and ready.

Trusting Tim would find a solution before they reached the unplowed section, Gannon put his truck in gear and turned the wheel toward Adeline.
